Ultrasonic Underwater Communication Solution

2026.03.28

Technical Principle: Using Ultrasound to Overcome Underwater Communication Challenges

In underwater environments, electromagnetic waves suffer from severe attenuation and extremely limited transmission range, making reliable communication nearly impossible. Traditional wired solutions, on the other hand, restrict device mobility and flexibility.

ADW’s solution takes a different approach by utilizing ultrasound as the information carrier, leveraging its inherent advantages in water: low attenuation, strong directionality, and excellent penetration capability.

Ultrasound, a mechanical wave with frequencies above 20 kHz, propagates in water at approximately 1500 m/s—significantly faster than in air (340 m/s). Its short wavelength and moderate diffraction enable precise point-to-point communication even in complex underwater environments.

The system employs dedicated transducers to convert electrical signals into ultrasonic waves for transmission. At the receiver end, these waves are converted back into electrical signals. Combined with proprietary filtering algorithms, the system extracts meaningful signals from complex acoustic channels, enabling accurate environmental sensing and data analysis.

Three-in-One Functionality: Communication, Ranging, and Positioning

Unlike traditional systems that focus solely on communication, ADW’s solution integrates three core capabilities:

  • Reliable data communication

  • Accurate distance measurement using Time of Flight (ToF)

  • Precise positioning through triangulation

By measuring the travel time of ultrasonic signals, the system calculates distances with high precision. When combined with multiple base stations and triangulation algorithms, it enables real-time 3D positioning of underwater robots.

This acoustic positioning method is unaffected by water turbidity, ensuring high reliability even in low-visibility environments.

Autonomous Docking and Reliable Communication

The solution supports automatic docking and recharging functions. When a robot’s battery runs low, ultrasonic guidance enables it to locate and navigate to the charging station autonomously. High-precision ranging ensures safe and accurate docking.

The system achieves a stable communication range of over 20 meters, making it highly suitable for underwater consumer electronics and light industrial applications.

In terms of data integrity:

  • Bit Error Rate (BER): ≤ 10⁻³

  • Packet Loss Rate: ≤ 1%

These metrics are achieved through the inherent stability of ultrasonic signals in short-range transmission, combined with advanced channel coding and error correction techniques.

Building the “Golden Triangle” for Smart Underwater Applications

The solution establishes a synergistic system consisting of:

  • Smart terminals (control units)

  • Underwater robots (execution units)

  • Base stations (energy and data hubs)

This “golden triangle” enables real-time monitoring, precise control, and efficient operation of underwater systems, supporting tasks such as target detection, data transmission, and autonomous navigation.

As a leading provider of intelligent sensor and actuator solutions, ADW continues to drive innovation in connected technologies.

This ultrasonic underwater communication solution, first introduced at AWE, highlights ADW’s strong expertise in acoustic sensing and signal processing, offering a high-performance, cost-effective wireless solution for:

  • Underwater consumer electronics

  • Pool cleaning robots

  • Aquaculture monitoring

  • Underwater entertainment devices

Looking ahead, ADW will continue advancing acoustic sensing technologies and expanding their applications across diverse industries—empowering smarter, more efficient, and more convenient lifestyles.
